In this short video we share some of our German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP) Jax’s very first sit, recall, walk in front and first exposure to live gunfire (.22 calibre).
We started this training in late 2020 / early 2021 when Jax was between 10-152 weeks old (in the earlier parts of the video) and then 6-15 months old during the later parts of the video.
Before we exposed Jax to live .22 gunfire, we simulated this sound with a wooden clapper, starting from about 20-30 meters away then gradually getting closer and closer. Jax grew accustomed to this sound quickly and once he was exposed to live gunfire, he was not scared and acted quite normal.
Again, as we mentioned in our previous video “German Shorthaired Pointer Gundog Pup’s Scent Training with Deer Skin”, we used The Deer Dog Training Blueprint to train Jax and the methods within this video are all from that system.
You can find more info about this system here – note that there is no affiliation nor partnership, we simply purchased this system and cannot recommend it highly enough).
The filming isn’t great on this one as it was done on a phone at the time as that’s all we had and we were in and out of lockdowns so had to make do.
Also had to blur houses out of respect for people’s privacy.
We hope you enjoy this throwback to baby Jax (they grow so fast!) and would love to read about some of your gundog training methods in the comments below.
